Black Cottage wines are made with passion, traditional old world craftsmanship and modern techniques. Combining select parcels of fruit from the Awatere and the Wairau Valleys, we strive to create very special wines which are approachable and delicious. The Black Cottage, situated in the heart of the Wairau Valley, is where winemaker David Clouston lives and spends quality time with friends and family. It is also the quiet space in which he contemplates and constructs the very special wines on which he has built a fine reputation.
The long, consistent growing season, temperate pacific breeze and cool nights preserve the bright fruit characters which encourage classic Marlborough wines. Sauvignon Blanc is still the region’s principal grape but the climate is cool and fine examples of Riesling and Pinot Gris have emerged. With care and nurture, Pinot Noir grown on the Southern Valley hillsides and in the reaches of the Awatere, offer great clarity and finesse.
